Julia's Nine Month Old Photo Shoot

I've talked to many mothers and brides and they both agree time goes by too fast. Photographs help them recall special moments they would have otherwise forgotten. A few months ago Rhonda contacted me to photograph her soon to be second child. In order to capture this fleeting time I am photographing Julia several times in her first months. Below are some of my favorite photos from the latest shoot.

Sara & Todd's Wedding

I was recently approached to do some promotional photography for Georgetown Events, a group that owns several restaurants and bars. Shooting this type of work allows me to use models and give direction. I enjoyed the change of pace.

Kristin Fisher and Cliff Campbell were married on a perfect summer day on Assateague Island. Their exciting reception followed at Snug Harbor on Chincoteague Island. The wedding band, Jubeus, kept the reception going into the night. Best wishes Kristin and Cliff!

Why I'm a Photographer

Sometimes people ask me why I'm a photographer. I've always had so many reasons. As a photographer I've had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people; a brave Marine, a strong single parent, a chef raising bees. I get to be a fly on the wall at events I would not be at otherwise; a candle-lit underground dinner, a wedding at a family's country house or the middle of a Revolutionary War reenactment.

While working on a gift for my mother I realized the most important reason I am a photographer. She sent me some photographs that I haven't seen in years. I am a photographer because these images mean so much to me. There are so many memories that I would have forgotten if it weren't for photographs. I take photographs to preserve memories like this for others.

Restaurant Portraits

Recently I was hired to photograph a new restaurant in the district. Part of the shoot included portraits of their bartenders at the bar. The day of the shoot my assistant and I arrived early to set up a softbox and flash. With the extra time we were able to do a short test shoot and watch the bartenders make their most popular drinks.

After we completed the bar portraits I wanted to make a few more images. The day before the shoot my assistant and I scouted the location. While we were scouting I noticed a big booth at the front of the dinning room. The light was beautiful and I thought would make for great images. Below are these photographs.

Claire & Colin's Wedding

Last Saturday I assisted Paul Morse, one of my bosses, on a wedding. Claire and Colin were married on a perfect fall day at St. John's Episcopal Church. Their elegant reception followed at the Meridian House. I really enjoy second shooting on weddings like this. I get to work with talented photographers, observe them working, and in this case; share in documenting one of the most important days in a person's life.

The Many Faces of Eva

One of the many things I enjoy about working for other freelance photographers are their adorable dogs. Our current apartment is not really a good fit for a dog so I love any opportunity to play with other people's dogs. Here is Eva, a beautiful Golden Retriever. She's is a great subject to work with.

Summer Sailing

Life has been very busy. After graduation, a big move and many trips I finally have time to update my blog. These photos were taken on a sailing trip with friends outside of Philly.

My new favorite camera is the Instax Mini Instant Film Camera. It is great for trips like this because of it's portability. I also love the size of the images.

A Personal Refuge

I've always wanted to document my own family but for so many years school and work kept me photographing near home. I finally got to Michigan recently and photographed my grandparents and their home. They've been married for 54 years and have lived in their home since October 1956. After I got home I found a letter my grandmother put in my luggage.

In the note she said,
"As a young bride it was a goal - raise the kids, pay the mortgage, have a stable environment for the family. Now in the twilight of my life it has become a refuge - to shut out the fast changing world. A place that always stays the same."

DC Yoga Week

When I found out a massive yoga event was being held on the National Mall, near the Washington Monument, I was so excited. I knew it would make for some really visual opportunities. It was not only relaxing to shoot but really fun meeting so many people. The event included demonstrations of yoga, hula hooping, interactive acro-yoga and budokon.

Immigration Protest

People gathered in Lafayette Square, near the White House, on May 1st in protest of Arizona Law SB 1070. The protesters also pushed for immigration reform.
